Sony has just confirmed that it is currently working on a successor for the Playstation 4 console, which made an estimated 80 million sales, as Sony’s most successful gaming model since the Playstation 2.
“At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, the CEO and president of Sony, in an interview with Financial Times.
It is still not known whether the next model is officially named Playstation 5 or when the console will be released, but it has been suggested that the console could be at least 3 years away.
“We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” Kodera said as reported by Wall Street Journal.
The next model is not expected to be a ‘major depture’ from the PS4 and it is also expected to maintain a similar architecture.
Sony’s Playstation division has been Sony’s top performing business segment since the release of the PS 4 in 2013.
